25th Anniversary of the Cayman Islands Currency Board (Silver)

In celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Cayman Islands Currency Board, a limited edition of silver Proof $2 coins was released.

In 1969, the Government of the Cayman Islands established the Currency Board, which, with guidance from the Bank of England and Crown Agents, conducted a comprehensive study of the Islands' currency system. The board's recommendations, presented in 1971, led to the introduction of the Cayman Islands' own currency on 1 May 1972, replacing the Jamaican currency that had been in circulation.

This special commemorative $2 silver Proof coin, designed by Royal Mint engraver Robert Elderton, showcases the beautiful reverse designs of each circulating coin, featuring the Cayman Thrush, the Crayfish, the Hawksbill Turtle surfacing from the water, and the Cayman Schooner. These designs highlight the captivating flora and fauna of the Cayman Islands, as well as its rich maritime history. The intricate design also includes the Cayman Islands National Coat of Arms and the inscription "25TH ANNIVERSARY OF CURRENCY BOARD 1971-1996."

The obverse side displays the refined portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, created by sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
