Currently, there are six denominations of banknotes in circulation: $100, $50, $25, $10, $5, and $1.
Common Features
All Cayman Islands banknotes share the following characteristics:
"B" Series
In 1991, the $100, $25, $10, and $5 denominations were redesigned and upgraded for the first time. These four banknotes were further updated in 1996 when the $1 denomination also received its first redesign. The "B" series banknotes feature secondary colors to highlight design details and include enhanced security features.
"C" Series
In August 1998, Cmrai introduced the "C" series banknotes, which are an updated version of the "B" series. These notes reflect changes in the issuing authority and the law under which they are issued. The first denominations of the "C" series to be released were the $10, $5, and $1 notes, followed by the $100 and $25 denominations in August 1999. The "C" series $50 banknote was introduced in 2001 and was later replaced by the 2003 version.
"D" Series
In April 2011, the Cayman Islands introduced the first complete redesign of its banknotes with the "D" series. All six denominations were redesigned, featuring new images, patterns, and security features, while retaining many familiar elements from previous notes for continuity.
"Q/1" $1 Banknote
In February 2003, Cmrai issued a commemorative $1 banknote to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' first recorded sighting of the Cayman Islands in 1503.
"Q/2" $1 Banknote
In 2018, Cmrai released a commemorative banknote to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Cayman Islands' First Constitution.
